Our History

Mayne Island has had a long history of tennis in the community. For many years the only publicly accessible courts on the island were located behind the old fire hall. Undersized and falling into disrepair, dedicated players tried their best to pursue their passion. In 2006, plans were underway for a replacement to the fire hall and the courts were to be closed down. A small group of hard working volunteers took up the challenge of creating a new facility. Fate was on the side of the community as the Felix Jack Road Community Facility offered a corner of their land for the project. But how could a community with fewer than a thousand residents raise close to $150,000 to construct a 2 court facility. For a full year the dedicated volunteers went to every local business, every volunteer group or society, as well as local residents, to promote their cause. Letters of support and donations came from every corner of the community. A Charter Membership Program was established, grant proposals were written, some private individuals contributed significant monies, and what started out as a pipe dream became a reality. In the spring of 2008 our tennis facility was officially opened.

Our Group

Mayne Island Tennis has operated as an active, non-profit group, with courts built and operated by enthusiastic volunteers. Mayne Island Social Tennis (our new name), runs a membership program with a set amount of court time reserved for weekly scheduled play. Our two court facility has offered healthy recreation, fun competition, tournaments and weekly social events for over 16 years.
